I was musing recently how certain people act as our emotional triggers, triggering anger or frustration or other strong emotions in us. If we use the analogy of a pistol being triggered, the person pulling the trigger is not the one that causes the damage. It’s the bullet that comes from within that causes the damage.
Equally, the people and circumstances that trigger our emotions are not the ones who cause the damage. It’s the emotional bullet that is fired from within us that causes the damage. Luckily, we have a choice – to shoot emotional bullets each time our trigger is pulled or to release all the bullets from within so that the trigger no longer has the power to activate us. An empty pistol after all can not fire no matter how many times or how hard the trigger is pulled!
Releasing the hurt, pain and anger that lies within us comes through intention. Intend to release emotional wounds and to no longer come from a place of acting as the victim, but to own our power. It’s a subtle but powerful shift in perspective.
So next time someone or something triggers you, stop and ask yourself if you’re going to be the victim or stand strong in your power?
